An icebreaker that teaches your classroom

Most first-day icebreakers are about the students. This one is about the room. As you call each square, point to where that object lives or explain the routine behind it, and by the end of the game the class has toured the room without a single lecture.

It works for a substitute too. Hand out cards, call twenty squares, and the class has a shared activity that needs no prep and no supplies beyond a printer.

Ways to play

• Classic line: five in a row, calling each item and pointing to it in the room.
• Scavenger version: students find and touch each item before marking it.
• Find someone who: paste in student-focused prompts and turn it into human bingo.
• Four corners: quick version for a short first-day block.
• Blackout: run it across the whole first week, marking items as they come up.

Supplies and prizes

Markers can be anything you already have: counting bears, cereal, pennies, or torn paper squares. Dry-erase markers over sheet protectors let you reuse one printed set for every class period.

First-week prizes that cost nothing: line leader, choose the read-aloud, first pick of classroom jobs, or a sticker. Save one bigger prize for a blackout round on Friday.
