Free Phonics Bingo Cards
Phonics bingo gives early readers repeated practice with the spelling patterns they are learning. The default list covers short vowels, blends, digraphs, and common vowel teams, and you can replace it with any sounds your students need.
Cards print with one spelling pattern per square. You call the sound or a word that contains it, and players cover the matching pattern. It works as a literacy center, small-group warm-up, or whole-class review game.

How to play phonics bingo
- Print one card per student plus a call sheet for the teacher or caller.
- Call a sound or a word that contains the target pattern, such as the /sh/ sound or the word ship.
- Students find the matching spelling pattern on their card and cover it.
- The first student to complete a row, column, or diagonal calls bingo.
- Have the winner read back each covered pattern to reinforce learning.
Building a focused word list
The generator needs at least 24 patterns for a 5x5 card with a free space. For a single-skill game, list that pattern in several forms. A short-a game might include at, an, ap, am, ad, and ag, plus a few review patterns from earlier lessons.
For mixed review, combine one or two patterns from each recent lesson. Add a few high-frequency sight words so every card stays at 24 entries while still reviewing multiple skills.
Classroom and homeschool ideas
Use phonics bingo as a five-minute warm-up before guided reading, or as an independent literacy-center activity while you meet with small groups. Pair students so stronger readers can support emerging ones.
Laminate the cards or slip them into page protectors and use dry-erase markers for a reusable set. The call sheet lists every pattern, so a parent volunteer or classroom aide can run the game without prep.

What phonics skills does this cover?
The default list includes short vowel CVC patterns, beginning blends, digraphs, and common long-vowel teams. You can swap in any sounds your class is currently studying.
How do I play phonics bingo?
The caller says a sound or a word that contains the target sound. Players find the matching spelling pattern on their card and cover it. The first to complete a line calls bingo.
Can I use pictures instead of letters?
Yes. Replace the text list with simple picture words like cat, ship, or rain. The generator will print the words in the squares, and you can call them aloud.
Is this good for small-group reading intervention?
Yes. Print just a few cards, use a focused word list, and play for five minutes. It gives repeated exposure to patterns without feeling like a worksheet.
Are the cards free to print?
Yes. Cards, call sheet, and PDF are free for classroom, homeschool, and tutoring use with no watermark and no sign-up.
