What are sight words?

Sight words are the high-frequency words that make up a huge share of everything a child reads — words like the, said, was, and there. Many of them do not follow regular phonics rules, so sounding them out slows a young reader down. The goal is instant recognition, and that comes from repeated, low-pressure exposure.

The list on this page is drawn from the classic Dolch and Fry word lists, the two collections most widely used in early elementary classrooms. Bingo turns drilling them into a game: students hear a word, scan for it, and cover it — dozens of quick repetitions inside a single round.

How to run sight word bingo

  • Print one card per student plus the call sheet, and hand out counters — beans, cubes, or plastic chips.
  • Ask players to read the word aloud before covering it. That one rule turns a listening game into reading practice.
  • Small groups of four to six keep the pace quick. Let a confident student be the caller so they get practice reading too.
  • Differentiate by swapping the word list: a shorter, easier set for students who are still building confidence, a trickier set for those racing ahead.
  • Play a line pattern for a five-minute warm-up, or blackout when you have a full centre rotation to fill.

Other lists that work well

The same board works for far more than sight words. Paste in this week's spelling list, a phonics family such as -ake or -ight, vocabulary from a class read-aloud, math facts and their answers, science terms, or Spanish and French vocabulary. Anything you can type as a list of 25 or more items becomes a bingo pack.
