How Many Squares Are on a Bingo Card?

A standard bingo card has 25 squares arranged in a 5x5 grid: 24 of them hold numbers and the center square is a free space that every player starts with covered. This is the layout used in classic 75-ball bingo, the version most common in the United States.

The B-I-N-G-O Columns

Each of the five columns draws its numbers from its own range, so the caller can announce a letter and a number together, such as “B-7”, and players know instantly which column to check.

• N: 31–45 (with the free center space)

Why the Center Is Free

A 5x5 grid has an odd number of squares, so there is always a single square dead center. Tradition marks that square FREE (sometimes with a star or logo) so every player starts the game with one square already covered, which slightly evens out play and gives every card a guaranteed piece of most winning patterns.

75-Ball vs. 90-Ball Bingo

75-ball bingo, the American standard, uses the 5x5 card described above. 90-ball bingo, popular in the UK and much of Europe, uses a different layout entirely: a ticket with 9 columns and 3 rows, for 27 total spaces. Only 15 of those spaces are filled with numbers — each row has exactly five numbers and four blanks — and there is no free space at all.

Smaller Cards for Kids

For young children or quick games, smaller grids work well. A 3x3 card has just 9 squares, and a 4x4 card has 16 squares. Both formats finish faster than a full 5x5 game, which keeps younger players engaged.
