Two ways to use this card

As a discussion game, the card works during a single meeting. Members mark squares as tropes and moments from the book being discussed come up in conversation, like a cliffhanger ending or a villain point-of-view chapter. It naturally pulls quieter members into the discussion because they need to justify each mark.

As a reading challenge, the same card stretches across a full year. Members mark a square each time they finish a book matching that category, such as a translated novel, a banned book, or a book over 500 pages, working toward a blackout by December.

Ways to run book club bingo

• Meeting icebreaker: hand out cards before discussion and mark squares as the group talks through the book's plot.
• Annual challenge: print one card per member in January and track progress at each monthly meeting.
• Book-specific edition: rebuild the word list around a single novel's characters and plot points for a deep-dive discussion night.
• New member welcome: use the card to introduce genre vocabulary to members newer to a particular genre, like fantasy or literary fiction.
• Prize round: whoever completes a line first picks the next book or hosts the following meeting.

Tips for hosts

For the reading-challenge version, print the card on cardstock so it survives a full year of handling, and consider laminating it so members can use a dry-erase marker and reuse the same card the following year with a fresh word list.

If your club rotates genres monthly, swap the word list to match that month's theme, for example loading it with mystery-specific tropes like red herrings and locked-room setups during a mystery-focused month.
