A hands-on way to review the solar system

Reading planet names off a worksheet is easy to forget. Hearing a planet called out, scanning a card, and marking the square gives students a small memory hook that sticks longer than passive review.

Because the word list mixes planets, moons, and mission vocabulary, teachers can run several rounds across a unit, starting with just the eight planets and later adding harder terms like nebula or supernova.

Ways to play

• Planet round: use only the eight planets plus the sun and moon for a quick game with younger students.
• Mission vocabulary round: call terms like countdown, booster, and splashdown while watching launch footage.
• Picture clue round: show an image of a planet or spacecraft instead of saying its name, and let players identify it.
• Star party edition: print cards for a nighttime stargazing event and mark off constellations and phases of the moon as they are spotted.

Tips for classrooms and events

For a science classroom, pair the game with a short video clip about each term before starting so students recognize new vocabulary instead of guessing blindly.

For launch parties, print cards ahead of time and hand them out during the wait before liftoff, then call terms as the countdown, ignition, and separation happen in real time.
